In my 30 years on this planet, I’d never completed a walking trail in Sydney….until now! A quick Google search revealed that a popular walk is the Spit to Manly Coastal walk, so that’s exactly what I did!

The Spit to Manly walk is a 10km trail following the coast all the way to Manly. It’s suitable for most levels of fitness and you can walk, jog or run! I chose to walk.

I don’t drive so I always share how to get to places via public transport. There are two buses from Wynyard station (buses 178 and 180) that will take you to Spit Bridge. To start the walk, you have to take the stairs and walk under the bridge to get to the starting point. I can assure you it is nothing but glorious for the next 10km.

During this walk, you will see beautiful beach views, with sail boats, or dogs splashing around the water. You’ll also find yourself seemingly in a deep green bushwalk, even though residential areas are close by the entire way. If you like birds, there are plenty of them flying about! If you’re lucky, you might even spot a lizard on your journey. I saw five of them! For history buffs, or if you’re interested in Australian culture, there are Aboriginal carvings towards the last third of the walk.

There are numerous lookout points throughout the trail and all are pretty spectacular. For me, the best one was a random spot roughly halfway in. But I also loved the lookout point of Manly. I sat there and had a break as I watched the ferries and other boats sail between Manly and Circular Quay. It’s breathtaking!

My favourite spot!

The Spit to Manly walk is part of a larger, 20km trail, and you could opt to continue your journey. Otherwise, you could enjoy a delicious lunch at the many awesome restaurants at Manly, or if you packed your bathers, cool off at the beach! I chose to end my adventure at Manly. As I approached the end, I have to admit I was relieved to see Manly Wharf, where I caught the ferry back to Circular Quay, and then the train back to my accommodation.

If you have any fitness goals, which I did, this walk is a great way to get in some exercise while on vacation. I had read that the walk takes 3-4 hours. I can proudly say I completed the 10km trail in 2.5hrs, and clocked roughly 18,000 steps on my fitness tracker. Exercise is great when it comes with awesome scenery!

I highly recommend the Spit to Manly walk. It’s easy to get to by public transport and ending at Manly means you can easily get back to downtown Sydney on the ferry. I see why it’s a popular choice for many people, locals and travellers!
